The Center for Visual Communication is pleased to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of ULAE, the renowned printmaking studio founded by Tatyana Grosman in 1957, with a major retrospective exhibition of over 120 of the atelier’s most famous and groundbreaking prints, and its recent publications.
ULAE revived contemporary printmaking by inviting now revered artists to work at its Long Island studio alongside master printers. Important early editions made with then young artists Jim Dine, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist and Robert Rauschenberg will be featured in the exhibition along with their recent work from the studio. ULAE is represented in the collections of most major international museums including the Albertina, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery (Australia), National Gallery (Canada), National Gallery (US), Seibu Museum and Tate Gallery. The Museum of Modern Art’s collection includes an example of every edition produced by ULAE and the Art Institute of Chicago has acquired over 5,000 early prints and working proofs from the studio.
The exhibition highlights ULAE’s legendary collaboration with major contemporary artists and includes new work by Amy Cutler, Carroll Dunham, Helen Frankenthaler, Jane Hammond, Orly Genger, Bill Jensen, Jasper Johns, Julian Lethbridge, Suzanne McClelland, Elizabeth Murray, Susan Rothenberg, Ed Ruscha, James Siena, Kiki Smith, Richard Tuttle, Tam Van Tran, Terry Winters, Zachary Wollard and Lisa Yuskavage.
